Dividing an Open Plan Office with Flooring in Cheltenham

Cheltenham Flooring

In a flagship office, every detail counts towards client impressions and employee comfort. For this project, we used a mix of carpet tiles and wood-effect vinyl flooring to subtly divide work areas, support acoustics and maintain a professional appearance for day-to-day use.

The Challenge: Dividing an Open Plan Environment

Open-plan offices are fantastic for collaboration – but without careful design, they can feel noisy and hard to navigate. This flagship office had to work for multiple audiences: employees, clients and partners. We needed a flooring solution that could define space, support acoustic performance and remain visually cohesive across the entire office. Some of the key challenges included:

  • Defining Work Zones Without Walls – The office had few physical partitions, so the flooring needed to create natural boundaries for desks, meeting areas and circulation.
  • Acoustic Management – With open-plan workplaces, noise can travel easily. The flooring needed to work alongside other acoustic solutions to balance quiet areas with collaborative spaces.
  • Professional Design – The finish needed to reflect the rest of the office design and the company’s professionalism. Everything from the colour to the texture had to be considered.
  • Durability and Maintenance – High footfall meant materials had to stand up to daily use, while being easy to clean and maintain.

For this project, we worked alongside the fit out company, Gravity Office Interiors, to ensure the flooring installation aligned perfectly with the wider project timeline and design vision.

The Solution: Corporate Office Flooring

This project used a variety of commercial flooring to zone different work areas. Each material was selected based on the specific needs of the space, balancing design, functionality and longevity.

Controlling Acoustics

Carpet tiles were installed throughout the meeting rooms, desk areas and collaborative areas. Alongside other acoustic solutions, the soft, dense material helps to reduce impact noise, making calls, meetings and discussions more comfortable for staff and visitors.

In the open-plan office, carpet tiles were strategically placed to define desking zones, with subtle pattern and colour variations signalling boundaries. This allows employees to intuitively understand different workspaces without the need for walls or partitions. The modular nature of carpet tiles also means the layout can evolve as the team grows or changes.

Zoning and Circulation

To create clear circulation routes and highlight high-traffic areas, we installed wood-effect vinyl flooring along walkways and breakout spaces. The durable, easy-to-clean surface is ideal for busy offices, while the warm, natural finish complements the office design, creating a sense of luxury similar to traditional hardwood floors.

Kitchen Flooring

The kitchen is a high-use area where staff move in and out, and spills are inevitable. We specified a durable floor that ties in with the office design while providing slip resistance, hygiene and easy cleaning. This ensures the breakout area remains safe, practical and visually cohesive with the rest of the office.
