Cheltenham Office: How Carpet Tiles Improve Acoustics

The Challenge: Balancing Sound Across Departments

This office brought together two very different departments under one roof. On one side, a team that needed quiet, privacy and minimal distractions to get work done. On the other hand, energy and collaboration were central – phones constantly rang, dashboards flashed and conversations flowed across the floor. 

We needed to find a solution that helped improve acoustics to balance both needs. With a small space to work with, the flooring needed to be cost-effective and integrate seamlessly with the wider office fit out.

The Solution: Modular Design, Maximum Flexibility

We were brought in by the main fit out contractors as the flooring specialists, tasked with delivering a solution that would complement the wider office design while addressing acoustic challenges. Carpet tiles were the ideal choice: their modular format allows for precise zoning, easy installation and future adaptability. Using these meant we could create distinct zones within a small office without building walls, preserving openness while subtly guiding movement and defining workspace boundaries.

Zoning Through Flooring

In this space, the modular carpet design allowed us to define desking areas with subtle changes in colour. This approach acts as a visual and psychological cue for a quiet area, and, in a compact footprint, it removes the need for additional partitions, which can eat into space and block natural light.

Acoustics Underfoot

Carpet tiles are a key tool in acoustic management. Soft, dense materials reduce impact noise, creating a quieter and more comfortable environment for focus-intensive work. In this project, carpet tiles were combined with other acoustic solutions to create a layered approach to sound management. This meant that energetic, collaborative activity in one part of the office didn’t carry over to quiet zones, giving each department the acoustic environment it needed to thrive.
