Transforming Coventry University Business School with Durable Carpet Tiles

Coventry University were looking to enhance their Business School lecture theatres to provide their students and faculty members with more modern and comfortable learning environments. They asked us to give these crucial spaces a new lease of life by installing flooring that would not only withstand heavy foot traffic but also enhance the lecture theatres’ aesthetic appeal.

Objective: 

The primary goal was to replace the Business School’s worn and outdated carpet tiles with a modern and hard wearing alternative.

Challenges:

• Style meets practicality: As lecture theatres are high traffic zones, with areas such as the stairs receiving a huge amount of footfall, it was important that we selected a heavy duty carpet tile that would stand the test of time.

• A consistent look: As they had replaced the carpet tiles in other areas of the university not too long ago, it was important that the new flooring in the lecture theatres was consistent with these updates and provided a cohesive look and feel.

• Working Around Furniture: The project required careful coordination to work around the existing furniture and allow for the removal of lecture seating whilst causing minimal disruption.

• Precision Cutting: The lecture halls had 240 vents across 16 seating platforms which needed to be cut around when installing the flooring. This time consuming part of the project required meticulous attention to detail and precision craftsmanship.

Strategies Implemented:

• Efficient Planning and Execution: We adopted a strategic approach, tackling one hall at a time to avoid disruption for students and staff while accommodating furniture removal.

• High Quality Materials: To combat the heavy traffic that the business school flooring would receive, we selected a tile that was durable and hardwearing. We removed the existing tiles and replaced them with new solution dyed nylon carpet tiles from Rawson Carpet Solutions. Jazz carpet tiles in colour ‘Granite’ were chosen for their durability being class 33 heavy contract certified and castor chair suitable. Not only are these kinds of nylon tiles durable and easy to clean, they are also resistant to staining and fading, making them a great option for this project.

Results:

• Enhanced Aesthetics: The replacement of worn carpet tiles with modern nylon tiles transformed the lecture halls, providing a fresh and contemporary look that will last.

• Improved Acoustics: Sound quality is key when it comes to educational spaces such as lecture halls. The Rawson Nylon loop ‘Jazz’ tiles we installed have excellent acoustic properties with 26dB sound reduction which will help support student concentration and wellbeing. 

• Uniformity Across Campus: By aligning the new flooring with previously replaced carpet tiles elsewhere in the university, we achieved a cohesive and uniform aesthetic.

• Precision Cutting: The new tiles were installed into existing trims and stair nosings. Despite the challenge of cutting around 240 vents, our skilled team ensured a flawless finish. 

• Timely Completion: We delivered the project in excellent time, finishing the work in 8 days, 2 days ahead of schedule exceeding the client’s expectations.
