Office Wayfinding: Embracing Creative Zoning Methods

The project arose due to the innovation and expansion of a forward-thinking tech group. To accommodate their growing workforce, they were relocating to a bigger office space in the heart of Cheltenham. When we heard about their vision for their new workspace, we knew we wanted in.

Engaging The Team

Like many before them, the tech group was experiencing the workplace in a different way. The pandemic had reimagined the way their teams engaged with the office, now embracing a more dynamic work model. From this, they planned on creating a flexible environment by introducing a wider variety of work areas. This included informal and formal meeting rooms, collaboration spaces, kitchen facilities, breakout areas, focus zones and a creative workshop.

Since their new office was mostly open-plan, they needed a solution to define each work area and introduce wayfinding throughout. That’s where we come in. Rather than settling for traditional partitioning methods that could compromise office space and opportunities for collaboration, we thought outside of the box to deliver an innovative solution.

So, What Did We Do?

Amidst a larger office fit out, we delivered a commercial flooring solution that brought the vision together. Using an interplay between colours, patterns and textures of the office flooring, we defined work zones and created a sense of wayfinding. Through expressive flooring designs, we strategically divided the breakout area from the benched desking, the kitchen from the meeting rooms and the reception from the workshop. We considered a neutral carpet design throughout to complement the office’s interior scheme.

Form and Function

Soft, dark grey carpet was fitted around the main footfall areas in the office. Cushioned and comfortable underfoot, the durable office carpet is engineered to withstand the general wear and tear of the office without losing quality over time. In the breakout area and meeting rooms, we demarcated each space with a new carpet design, introducing a monochromatic pattern that seamlessly blended into the overall neutral theme of the office interiors.

Let’s Get Messy

Enter the kitchen space and the flooring design switches to vinyl flooring. Using this type of commercial flooring provides better protection against spillages or splashes of water. Vinyl floors are also slip-resistant to ensure the safety of employees as they use the facilities.

Our flooring solutions created better way finding throughout the open-plan space. Through contrasting carpet patterns, we crafted clear and intuitive navigation throughout the office to improve efficiency, harmony and catered to diverse cognitive profiles. The result enhanced the overall experience for staff within the space.
